Intention for Tarawih

Updated: Mar 10

Q: What should my intention be for Tarawih prayer?

A: Tarawih prayer is from the intention-specific-prayers such a witr. In each set of two rakaʿāt, one should say the intention silently, as it is recommended. The intention can be expressed as: “I intend to pray two units of the Sunnah Taraweeh” or “I intend to pray two units of the Ramadan night prayer.” This is based on the hadith: “Actions are judged by their intentions.”
