Q: If ʿEid falls on a Friday, must one still attend Jumuʿah?
A: If ʿEid falls on a Friday and a person attends the ʿEid prayer with the Imām, he is granted a concession regarding Jumuʿah.
The jurists explain that what is lifted is attendance, not obligation. This distinction is important.
Suqūṭ al-ḥuḍūr (lifting attendance) means he is permitted to miss Jumuʿah and instead pray Ẓuhr, similar to someone who is ill.
Suqūṭ al-wujūb (lifting obligation) would mean Jumuʿah is not legally required of him at all, such as a traveler.
In this case, the ruling is the first type. The obligation technically remains, but attendance is excused.
Because of this:
Jumuʿah may still be established with his participation.
He may also lead the prayer.
However, it is recommended to attend Jumuʿah in order to exit the scholarly disagreement.
If a person did not attend the ʿEid prayer, then the concession does not apply and he must attend Jumuʿah.
As for the Imām, the concession does not apply to him. He must still establish Jumuʿah so that those who wish to attend may do so. If the required number is not present, they pray Ẓuhr instead.
