Q:What is the ruling on garment length for both men and women?
A: The ruling on garment length varies depending on the person, the position of the garment, the intention, and whether there is a valid need. The key points are as follows:
1. For Men
Above Mid-Calf: Makrūh – to prevent risk of exposing the ʿawrah.
Below the Ankles without Need: Makrūh – discouraged due to dragging garments unnecessarily.
Below the Ankles out of Pride: Ḥarām – forbidden because it stems from arrogance and self-glorification.
Below the Ankles with a Need: Permissible – such as covering physical defects.
In Battle: Permissible – for intimidation of the enemy.
2. For Women
Extending Hem up to a Forearm’s Length: Permissible – to ensure the feet are covered.
Longer than a Forearm’s Length: Not Allowed – exceeds the needed coverage.
