Exceptional Commerce During Friday Prayer

Q: Are there any sales transactions that are valid during the prohibited time of commerce on Friday?

A: Yes, exceptions for those obliged to attend prayer are made for cases of necessity, such as,

  • Someone purchasing water in dire need to drink or purify themselves.

  • A starving person buying food.

  • Someone purchasing clothing to cover their body.

  • Buying items for burial if delaying would cause harm (e.g., body decay).

  • A disabled or blind individual purchasing transportation or assistance to attend the prayer.

In these cases, and in those of a similar nature, the necessity overrides the prohibition, making the sale permissible and valid.
