Duration of Time of I’tikaf

Updated: Mar 23, 2025

Q: How long do I have to stay in the masjid to be in i’tikaf?

A: The minimum duration of iʿtikāf (seclusion in the masjid) is any amount of time which is considered greater than a fleeting moment i.e. the duration of time needed to be considered staying in the masjid and not passing through.

It is therefore recommended for anyone entering the masjid to intend iʿtikāf for the duration of their stay, especially if they are fasting.

To avoid the difference of opinion regarding the minimum duration, it is however recommended to stay at least a complete day and night.
