Q: What conditions must be met for Hajj and Umrah to become obligations?

A: The conditions of Hajj and Umrah are of 3 categories which are conditions of obligation, conditions of sufficiency, and conditions of validity.

The conditions of obligation include:

1. Islam

2. Total freedom

3. Mental soundness

4. Pubescent

5. Capability

6. FOR WOMEN ONLY: Presence of a mahram

All of these conditions must be met for Hajj and Umrah to be obligatory.

The conditions of sufficiency include:

1. Islam

2. Total freedom

3. Mental soundness

4. Pubescent

All of these conditions must be met for the obligatory Hajj and Umrah to be fulfilled.

The conditions of validity include:

1. Islam

2. Mental soundness

Both of these conditions must be met for Hajj and Umrah to be valid.
