Commerce During Jumu’ah Prayer

Writer: John StarlingJohn Starling

Q: What is the ruling of buying and selling during Friday prayer?

A: It is prohibited to buy and sell during Friday prayer.

This prohibition is rooted in the verse,

“O you who believe! When the call is made for the prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah, 62:9).

This verse directs Muslims to prioritize attending Friday prayer over worldly transactions. The prohibition ensures that eligible individuals (resident adult men) are not distracted from fulfilling this religious obligation. Such a prohibition renders the transaction haram (sinful) and invalid (fasid) if conducted by someone obligated to attend.
