Charity During the 10 of Dhu al-Hijjah

Q: What is the virtue of charity during the first ten days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah?

A: Giving voluntary charity is recommended at all times, especially from wealth that exceeds one’s ongoing needs and the needs of those under one’s care.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those under your care, and the best charity is that given from surplus wealth.”

Because the first ten days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah are among the most virtuous days of the year, acts of charity performed during them carry even greater virtue and reward. Righteous deeds during these days are more beloved to Allāh than during any other days, and charity is among the greatest of those deeds.

For this reason, charity given during virtuous times and places is considered greater in reward due to the multiplication of deeds. The jurists specifically mention the first ten days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah among the most virtuous times for voluntary charity, just as they mention the sacred precincts of Makkah and Madinah among the most virtuous places.

These days are therefore an opportunity to increase in generosity, assist the poor and needy, support beneficial causes, relieve hardship from others, and draw near to Allāh through sincere acts of giving.
